Nia: Love & Hope
Nia “Love and Hope” depicts a portrait of my daughter Nia sitting on the front steps of her home. This painting is one of many in a series of paintings I’ve titled Family. What inspired me to paint Nia is that she is my daughter and the way she wore her hair on that day. Nia is sitting down on the front step of the house with a contemplative expression as many of my paint subjects do. I liked the message on her shirt which states Love and Hope. I decided to give the painting that title because her expression of melancholy, looked as if she’s in need of love and hope. The world today could use a lot of love and hope The painting is done with watercolors using various wash techniques such as wet-in wet, control wash and drybrush. I work with watercolors because I enjoy the transparent effects of the medium and the layering of washes to create various tones and values.
